The telecommunications giant, which has been the sole carrier of iPhone since its arrival on the U.S. market, is set to lose exclusivity when Apple’s famous handset begins selling at Verizon early next year.

AT&T has increased its early upgrade pricing! The fee it charges customers went up from $75 to $200. For this, the Dallas, Texas-based company said pricing for the iPhone, basic and quick messaging phones are unaffected by the new policy. Furthermore, their early upgrade prices will remain unchanged.

According to Todd Rethemeier, an analyst with Hudson Square Research noted that the Apple can activate and even sell 4.5 million iPhones in this quarter. The said figure would then cover a 41 percent increase over the number of devices activated last quarter. At first, he predicted that AT&T would only activate 3.5 million iPhones during the quarter, but changed it afterwards when he noticed the number of stores that are still out of stock of iPhone 4 and the internet wait time.

John Stankey, the Operations CEO of AT&T said that the company is planning its debut for its fourth generation long-term evolution of LTE network by the middle of next year. He also noted that AT&T is on its way of testing the 4G LTE network in Dallas and in Baltimore and is positive that it will cover 75 million people before the year 2011. Even the Verizon Wireless has reaffirmed that it has been planning to deploy the latest LTE network in 30 networks by the end of this year.

A recent survey conducted on a test population of 4000 US consumers revealed that 15 % of the group used mobile devices to purchase goods. Another 50% opined that they used the mobile to confirm availability and prices of commodities. Another 15% opined that they used their mobile devices to compare prices at different stores.20 % used their mobiles to make shopping list and two thirds of the surveyed people indicated that they were aware of the potential use of mobile phones in shopping. The study was conducted by Sterling Commerce, an AT&T Inc. Company and Demandware Inc.
